Happy Earth Day: Top Tips for Eco-Conscious Dental Care

Today's Earth Day marks a day for people across the globe to come together, not only to celebrate our beautiful planet, but also to raise awareness and support environmental protection.

Here are our top tips for eco-conscious dental care!

green eco friendly dental products

  1. Opt for a bamboo toothbrush or an electric one Bamboo is an amazing material that is very fast growing, uses little to no pesticides and it benefits the soil, making a super sustainable choice. Although electric toothbrushes aren't perfect, they can remove more dental plaque and produce less waste overall than disposable plastic ones.

  2. Recycle toothpaste tubes and toothbrushes Check your local area to see if they can recycle your toothpaste tube. Pump action toothpaste tubes are easier to recycle and can be placed in the recycling if your local authority also collects plastic pots, tubs and trays. Most electric toothbrush brands also have a recycling program so be sure to check out their websites.

  3. Turn the tap off whilst you're brushing Leaving the tap running whilst you brush your teeth can be a significant waste of water. If you are brushing twice a day for 2 minutes each time, you could be wasting over 24 litres of water a day – more than an average dishwasher cycle!

  4. Choose sustainable dental floss and picks There are so many dental products on the market to choose from, but some are more sustainable than others. From biodegradable materials to reusable ones, you can help reduce plastic waste with some simple switches. For example, you can endlessly use this floss holder with any floss to easily clean between your teeth every day.

  5. Try to travel via public transport or foot Leave the car at home and reduce your carbon footprint. Our city centre location makes us extremely easy to reach by train, tram, bus or bike!

  6. Choose a practice with sustainable values As a practice, we believe it is important to do our bit in helping the planet. We are proudly paperless which means we will contact you electronically and we use digital systems including when we take x-rays, make clinical notes and take scans of your teeth. We separate and recycle our waste wherever possible and we invest in reusable or autoclavable instruments over single use plastic ones.
