Airflow polishing is a procedure to remove stubborn stains from the surfaces of your teeth. It is minimally abrasive, very gentle and pain free. It removes stains that a regular scale and polish can not remove such as stubborn smoking stains and stains between the teeth. It involves high pressure water, powder and air which blasts the stains away. The powder is made from calcium carbonate crystals which are highly effective for stain removal.

No, airflow polishing does not hurt if your gums are healthy, however there is a lot of water. We will suction this all up for you. You will also have to stay open for a while whilst we remove all the stains. If you have a lot of gum inflammation, airflow polishing can result in a lot of bleeding and tenderness and your dental hygienist or therapist may advise you to have the airflow polishing once gum inflammation has reduced. They may carry out ultrasonic scaling first and give you some advice on how to reduce the inflammation before rebooking you for the airflow polish. This depends on how often you consume coloured foods and drinks such as coffee, or how often you smoke. Your dental therapist will monitor this and suggest when you may need it or if you feel like the stains are building up, you can always book yourself in directly using our booking page. Usually, patients need this treatment every year or so.

If you have stains on the surfaces of your teeth from tea, coffee, smoking, red wine or other coloured foods and drinks, airflow can help remove these surface stains. Very stubborn stains may require additional appointments to remove the stains, which will incur additiona fees. If you have very inflamed gums or gum disease, you may need some work to stabilise your gums to reduce inflammation before you are suitable for airflow treatment. If you have an upper respiratory tract infections, severe chronic bronchitis/asthma you are not suitable for airflow treatment. Your dentist, dental therapist or dental hygienist can advise you on alternative treatments. If you have intrinsic staining of the teeth (staining that is inside the tooth) airflow cannot remove these stains. Airflow can only remove extrinsic staining and does not whiten teeth.

No airflow polishing will not whiten your teeth. It is designed only to remove extrinsic staining of the teeth, such as those caused by coloured foods and drinks, and smoking. Teeth can be discoloured internally from aging, trauma, certain medications, or may look discoloured from loss of enamel through toothwear. Airflow will not change the shade of your teeth.
